The 15th installment of the CEO Unplugged series, held on 1 February 2008 at the NUS Business School Hon Sui Sen Auditorium, saw two advisory board members of the NUS Business School, Mr Jonathan Larsen, Country Business Manager and CEO of Citibank Singapore Limited and Dr Ron Sim, Founder and CEO of OSIM International Limited share their personal thoughts, experiences and insights on being an effective global citizen and management in Asia respectively.
"Be extremely humble, listen well and learn fast."
These were the words of wisdom from Mr Larsen, for anyone who wants to be effective on a global platform.
Encouraging those present to venture out of their home country to explore and experience life in a different place, he further explained that in today's globalized world, where work is no longer confined within the boundaries of our home country, the tendency is to hold on to our perceptions which may mot be suitable for the country we are working in.
Reiterating the message, Dr Sim highlighted that management in Asia differs distinctively from management in western countries. For example, countries such as America are easier to manage as they are more structured and systematic as compared to companies in Asia.
"The large political, economical and cultural differences in Asia can make managing companies here challenging and frustrating. We therefore have to be flexible and employ different management strategies in the different environments we are in," advised Dr Sim.
Moving on to their personal beliefs for success, Mr Larsen shared that for him, "success is relative and a personal choice. Success is the ability to show that purpose you believe in."
Added Dr Sim, "Believe in yourself. I believe therefore I create."
It was clear that the 200 that attended the event found the sharing insightful.
"It was an enjoyable and interactive evening. Both CEOs are really passionate about what they do and I find this session to be really useful especially to budding entrepreneurs and leaders seated in the auditorium," observed alumnus Mr Lai Chong Meng (UCLA-NUS MBA 2005)
Added Mr Peter Tay (BBA Hons 1975, MBA 1987), President of NUSBSA, "The purpose of the CEO Unplugged series is for us to see the personal side of CEOs apart from the work they do and I believe many of us did tonight."
The CEO Unplugged series is a flagship event of the NUSBSA.
