The private dining room at the stylish Bosses Restaurant at VivoCity saw the reunion of the APEX MBA Class of 2005 on 25 March 2008. It was an evening of recollection of memorable moments and lively banter - such as calling each other "Boss", as a pun on the name of the restaurant - even faculty members who turned up in numbers were not spared.
"We had an exceptional time whilst in class, and everyone developed such great friendships that carried on till today," beamed Mr Ng Kim Hung (APEX MBA 2005), who also let slip that the class conferred one of three titles in jest to classmates at the end of each module. Unofficial awards included the much-coveted "Rip Van Winkle" award for "he-who-dozed-off-the-most".
Mr Steven Yeo (APEX MBA 2005), who won the unofficial title of "Best Student" once during the course for being a hard worker, found the MBA program valuable not just in content but also in providing an excellent opportunity for quality networking with the faculty and other alumni.
"The faculty really gave us personalized attention in class, ensuring that each had their chance to speak out in class," recalls Ms Angie Ng (APEX MBA 2005). "As a result, we established friendships with them and even until today, we keep in touch with them."
The classmates and faculty regularly met up, such as during Chinese New Year and other ad hoc occasions. Chomp Chomp Food Centre is a favorite hangout for the class of 14 graduates. In fact, the class developed such strong bonds that two classmates, Mr Clarence Tan (APEX MBA 2005) and Mr Micheal (Lee) (APEX MBA 2005) became business partners.
"We did such crazy things together. I remember the time we helped a classmate move a 3-seater couch from Singapore to Shanghai for our one-week stay there! It certainly put our "domain knowledge" to good use!" jested Mr Ng.
The APEX MBA class spent a week each in Bangalore and Shanghai visiting companies as part of the one and a half year program. "I think the overseas visits are valuable, especially for someone without the exposure," remarked Mr Ng, who is General Manager, Information Services & Logistics at Murata Electronics.
Reflecting on the program, Mr Ng remembered the tough assignments, but saw the value of the lectures. "I still keep the notes and slides till today - and found them most useful when I make presentations."
Remarked Ms Ng, "It was a great program that brought together quality faculty and students. It's wonderful to meet up with some of the faculty again. I'm glad the school keeps in touch with us, and I'm already looking forward to the next time the "Bosses" meet up!"
