CAN National Council Inaugural Meeting in Beijing

It was one ambitious and successful meeting. It marked the first annual nationwide board meeting of all of NUS Business School's Chinese Alumni Networks (CAN). For more than two hours, the meeting discussed NUS Business School's strategy in China, the facilitation of exchange among EMBA alumni in China, and the improvement of collaboration between regional alumni networks.

Calvin Yan, Director of Shanghai Office played host to the group made up of members of the Northern CAN Advisory Board and Executive Committee; Yang Tseng Pu (APEXC 2001), President of Eastern CAN (Shanghai Chapter); Qing Yin (MBA-C 2003), Secretary General of Chengdu Alumni Network; Chen Xiao (MBA-C 2003), President of Southern CAN (Xiamen Chapter); and EMBA alumni from the various CAN Chapters across China.

Flying there to join the meeting were Professor Bernard Yeung, Dean of NUS Business School; Professor Susanna Leong, Vice-Dean of Graduate Studies; Professor Brian Hwarng, Academic Director for NUS MBA Program with Peking University; and Aw Beng Teck, Director of Global Alumni Network Office.


Dean's Address
Professor Bernard Yeung:
I appreciate all alumni for coming all the way to attend this meeting, and also thank the School for the support. China is one of the most important economies in the world, as well as the strategic focus of the School. We will continue to support all kinds of alumni activities and events.


Speakers Sharing
Professor Susanna Leong:
Presenting the School's latest updates, she explained that 2010 being NUS Business School's 45th anniversary, 45 celebratory events will be launched. Meanwhile, with the upcoming completion of the School's new building, she invited all alumni to return and visit their alma mater.

Professor Brian Hwarng and Calvin Yan:
Both introduced different aspects of the School's new plans in China. For example, in targeting the Chinese market, the School is collaborating with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy to launch a Master in Public Administration & Management program. It is also planning to set up Western CAN and Foshan Alumni Network in order to reinforce its Chinese alumni strategy.

Jia Chang Bin (APEXC 2003), President of Northern CAN; Yang Tseng Pu; Qing Yin and Chen Xiao:
Each presented their Network's activities, developments and plans; and expressed their Network's commitment to organizing activities to gather alumni across their respective region. Collectively, they also shared valuable advice to the School Suggestions on improving the School's brand awareness, on reinforcing the School's alumni strategy, on launching more programs targeting the Chinese market, and on offering alumni more lifelong learning opportunities.

Du Hai Bo (APEXC 2003), President of Northern CAN Advisory Board:
He expressed confidence over the Network's cohesion, as proven by the successful handovers of leadership roles. He also believes the Network in on the right track with its diverse fixed-schedule activities.
