Come December, some 20 students will embark on an International Service Program (ISP) of a special kind. They will head to Suichuan County in China's Jiangxi Province to support and conduct innovative educational programs to raise the literacy standard and skills of the local youths and teachers. NUS-Shatian Hope Primary School has 10 teachers and 307 students aged between 7 to 13 years old (Grade 1 to 5).

The student group will play games with and teach the children in English so as to rouse their interest and aptitude in the language. At the same time, the teachers there will get a chance to interact with the visiting group in English as well as to learn some IT skills from them. Through these activities, it is hoped that the teachers will be able to use the internet to research various new teaching techniques.

In return, our NUS students will be immersed in the local culture. They will stay in villagers' houses by day, documenting their daily routines. The aim of this activity is to instil in our students appreciation of Suichuan County's culture. The other positive program that will also create social benefits to all involved is a survey and video documentation of the current socio-economic status of the community in order to better understand and help formulate a plan to maintain a sustainable livelihood.

Since its official launch in August 2009, the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy (CSEP) and the NUS Business School has been establishing a solid partnership through sustainable projects, some of which are initiated by our students. This ISP to NUS-Shatian Hope School is one such example of a student-driven sustainable project. Apart from CSEP, which organized a training session for the students at Pulau Ubin, the Shanghai Office, Southern China Alumni Network and Eastern China Alumni Network have joined in efforts to source for computers which will be used by the teachers and students of the NUS-Shatian Hope School.
