On April 1, 2017, the Chinese government announced the establishment of the Xiong’an New Area. Consolidating the three counties of Xiong, Rongcheng and Anxin in Hebei Province, this is the latest in a long line of state-level new areas that include the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the Pudong New Area.

Though an ancient state, China ceaselessly forges ahead with reforms. Forming an economic triangle with the metropolises of Beijing and Tianjin, Xiong’an is strategically positioned at the center of the coordinated growth of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jingjinji) region. Tasked with taking in non-core functions of the Chinese capital, the New Area serves as part of a “millennium strategy” that connects China and the world in a grand project that secures the development of tomorrow on the back of solid growth of today.

This will create business prospects and opportunities worth trillions. The deployment of this monumental project will also encompass a wide range of issues, such as innovative models of urban planning, industrial restructuring, environmental protection and provision of new public services.

Echoing the booming academic interest in the planning, construction and growth of the Xiong’an New Area, NUS Business School is keen to facilitate in-depth discussions on the development of the project by leveraging its strengths as a leading academic and educational institution in Asia with a truly international platform that offers an integrated model of research, education and industry, a sophisticated philosophy of urban planning only Singapore can offer and a unique Asian perspective on development.

At this 2017 Forum on the Outlook of the Xiong’an New Area hosted by NUS Business School, renowned scholars, prominent experts and business leaders from both the Singaporean and Chinese communities of urban planning and development will come together to share their expertise and insights into the prospects of this millennium project.
